In 1863, 150 years ago, the London Underground was opened, the world’s first urban mass transit system.

50 years later, Edward Johnston was commissioned to design a typeface that “should have the bold simplicity of the authentic lettering of the best periods and yet belong unmistakably to the twentieth century.”

And then Johnston Sans was born.
